  BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme
We offer Eye Testing for inherited eye diseases under the British Veterinary Association/Kennel Club/International Sheep Dog Society (BVA/KC/ISDS ) Eye Testing Scheme

What is the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme?

For over 30 years BVA has operated a hereditary eye disease screening programme in conjunction with the Kennel Club (KC) and the International Sheep Dog Society (ISDS). The scheme now covers 11 hereditary eye conditions in over 50 breeds of dog.

The main purpose of the scheme is to ensure that there is no evidence of hereditary eye disease in dogs or bitches used for breeding. Other terms sometimes used to describe the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme include Eye Testing and Eye Scoring.

What is involved in the eye test?
The eye testing requires a visit to our practice where an eye examination is carried out to screen for inherited eye diseases. No sedation or anaesthetic is required and the process takes around 20 minutes (NB You must bring your original Kennel Club registration document with you, otherwise we shall be unable to complete the certification).

Following the test, we will stamp the registration document and you receive a Certificate of Eye Examination stating the results of the eye test. The results are entered as affected/unaffected for each certifiable condition. The results are also sent to the Kennel Club for inclusion on their database.

How often should I have my dog tested?
Breeders are generally advised to submit breeding dogs and bitches for annual eye tests, since some inherited eye diseases can develop later in life. However, it is also possible for entire litters to be tested for congenital hereditary conditions such as Collie Eye Anomaly and multifocal retinal dysplasisa when they are between six and twelve weeks of age. Details of litter screening are also included in the literature although results of litter screening are not published.

How do I book a BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Test?
Contact your own veterinary surgeon and ask them to call us to book an appointment for an Eye Test (also known as an Eye Score). We will then contact you to arrange an appointment, usually within a few days.
