James graduated with distinction from the University of Bristol in 2002. He spent the next five years in small animal general practice, gaining the Certificate in Veterinary Ophthalmology in 2007. In 2007 he was appointed to a European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists approved residency training programme at Davies Veterinary Specialists.

"My interest in specialising in ophthalmology began immediately after graduation when, at my first practice, I discovered a passion for ophthalmology. My decision to become a specialist was finally consolidated after attending a unique ophthalmology course in the USA aimed at residents. The course fed a hunger, the extent of which I never knew I had, and I immediately began to search for a suitable residency program.

Gaining the RCVS Certificate in Veterinary Ophthalmology and taking up the position as Resident in Veterinary Ophthalmology at DVS have set me on the right path to achieving my ultimate goal as a vet – becoming a specialist in ophthalmology."
