MA
Master of Arts

RCVS
Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. The governing body of the veterinary profession in the UK. Vets must be members (MRCVS) to practice.

FRCVS
Fellowship of the RCVS. Awarded on the basis of thesis, examination or meritorious contribution to the profession.

RCVS Certificates:
Certificates are awarded by the RCVS, based upon examination, and are intended as the first step in post-graduation qualification.

  • CertSAC:Certificate in Small Animal Cardiology
  • CertVR:Certificate in Veterinary Radiology
  • CertVA:Certificate in Veterinary Anaesthesia
  • CertSAM: Certificate in Small Animal Medicine
  • CertSAS: Certificate in Small Animal Surgery
RCVS Diplomas:
The RCVS awards Diplomas, based upon
examination and experience. Diploma holders are generally accepted to have demonstrated ability that would be appropriate for consideration as an RCVS Recognised Specialist (q.v.)
  • DVC:Diploma in Veterinary Cardiology
  • DVR:Diploma in Veterinary Radiology
  • DSAM:Diploma in Small Animal Medicine
  • DSAS (Orth.):Diploma in Small Animal Surgery (Orthopaedics)
  • DSAO:Diploma in Small Animal Orthopaedics
  • DVOphthal:Diploma in Veterinary Ophthalmology
  • DipAVN:Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Medical or Surgical)
European College Diplomas
Within Europe (and America) a number of specialist colleges exist, entry to which is via appropriate training and examination, leading to the award of a Diploma of that College.

Most European Diplomas are considered equivalent to RCVS Diplomas and many RCVS Diplomas are being superseded by European College Diplomas.

    College of Veterinary Internal Medicine
  • DipECVN Diploma of the European
    College of Veterinary Neurology

RCVS Recognised Specialist
To be a RCVS recognised specialist one must usually have an appropriate post-graduate specialist qualification (e.g. RCVS or European Diploma) and adequate experience, as well as demonstrating ongoing clinical activity. Specialist status is reviewed every five years.

European Specialist
Membership of a specialist college qualifies one as a European specialist. It is initially gained by successfully passing the Diploma examination. Thereafter it is reviewed every five years on the basis of clinical and academic activity as well as participation and performance in CPD.
