Antimicrobial Resistance Week: Hand Hygiene at Davies

17th November 2025

This week, we’re focusing on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)—a global health challenge that impacts both humans and animals. At Davies, we’re committed to protecting the effectiveness of antibiotics, and one of the most powerful ways to do that is through infection prevention and good hygiene practices.

Hand Hygiene Event

On Thursday 9th October, we hosted a dedicated Hand Hygiene Event in the staff room. With all our new hygiene products now in place (yes, even the loo roll!), we partnered with Essity to deliver interactive, hands-on training.

The event featured:

  • 🕶️ VR headset experiences for immersive learning
  • UV disclosing lotion demos to reveal hidden germs
  • 💧 Skin dryness testing equipment to support skin health

This wasn’t just for clinical Associates—it was for everyone. Hand hygiene is a team effort that helps keep our patients, clients, and ourselves safe, while also caring for skin health.

Why Hand Hygiene Matters for AMR

Every time antibiotics are taken, AMR bacteria are created, especially on the skin and in the gut. Studies even show that pets and owners share AMR bacteria due to close contact. Preventing infections through hygiene means fewer antibiotics are needed—and that slows resistance.

Here are some key facts:

  • AMR already kills more people than HIV, TB, and influenza combined.
  • By 2050, AMR is predicted to cause three human deaths every minute.
  • Antibiotics are not harmless—they can cause gastrointestinal upset, including vomiting and diarrhoea.
  • Many conditions, like Kennel Cough or bacteria in urine without symptoms, do not require antibiotics.
  • New evidence shows shorter courses can be sufficient when antibiotics are needed.

What Can You Do?

  • Don’t pressure your vet to prescribe antibiotics.
  • Complete the course if antibiotics are prescribed.
  • Dispose of unused antibiotics properly—return them to your vet or chemist.
  • Never share antibiotics between pets or people.
  • Wash your hands regularly after contact with your pet.

Our Commitment

At Davies, we are dedicated to using antibiotics responsibly. Hand hygiene is a simple but powerful way to protect our patients—and the future of medicine.
