Mylo’s Story – How Blood Donors Helped Save This Little Cavapoo

Emergency and Critical Care, Internal Medicine

16th March 2026

Meet Mylo, a gorgeous white, curly Cavapoo with a gentle nature and an ever‑wagging tail. He quickly became a favourite with the team during his stay with us, especially when he ended up spending Christmas 2024 in the hospital and charming everyone he met.

Why Mylo Came to See Us

Mylo’s family noticed tiny red spots on his skin, known as petechiae. These are small areas of bleeding under the skin and can be a sign that something is seriously wrong.

Tests showed that Mylo had very low platelets, the cells that help with normal blood clotting. He was diagnosed with:

Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia (IMTP)

A condition where the immune system mistakenly destroys its own platelets, leaving the patient at risk of dangerous bleeding.

To get a complete picture, Mylo also had chest X‑rays, an abdominal scan, and further blood tests to rule out other causes.

Mylo’s Treatment Journey

Starting Treatment

Mylo began steroid medication to calm his immune system. But because his platelets were extremely low, he started to bleed from his gums and intestines.

Life-Saving Transfusions

To support him, Mylo received:

  • Red blood cell transfusions
  • Platelet transfusions

These helped stabilise him while the medication took effect.

A Christmas in Hospital

Mylo needed three weeks of care, which meant spending Christmas with the team. Despite everything, he stayed cheerful, formed close bonds with his nurses, and always greeted everyone with his trademark waggy tail. He brought a lot of joy to the ward during a very busy season.

How Mylo Improved

Recovery from IMTP can be slow, but Mylo responded exactly as we hoped:

  • His platelet levels gradually increased
  • His bleeding stopped
  • His energy returned
  • He was finally able to go home to his family

Today, Mylo is in remission, and we are steadily reducing his medications. He’s back to living a full, happy life — and he’s always excited to return for check‑ups so he can say hello to his hospital friends.

Why Blood Donation Matters

Mylo’s story shows just how vital pet blood donors are.

The transfusions he received were essential to keeping him alive long enough for the treatment to work. Dogs and cats who donate blood can make the difference between life and death for patients like Mylo.

Blood donors help pets with:

  • Severe anaemia
  • IMTP and other clotting disorders
  • Trauma or emergency bleeding
  • Medical conditions requiring urgent support

Thanks to donor pets — and their generous owners — Mylo got the chance to recover.

A Happy Ending

Mylo’s bravery, his family’s devotion, and the dedication of the veterinary team all played a part in his recovery. But the final piece of the puzzle came from the blood donors who gave him the support he needed to fight back.

He may not realise how serious things were, but his joyful tail, his friendly greetings, and his happy life now say it all.
