Location: Davies Veterinary Specialists, Manor Farm Business Park, Higham Gobion, Hitchin, Hertfordshire SG5 3HR

Job Type: Fixed Term (Full time)

Hours: 42.5 hours 5-day week.  Additional on call requirement – 1 in 4 weeknights and weekends.

About the role

Your role and responsibilities

The purpose of this internship is to provide a practical hands-on training experience within veterinary anaesthesia, gaining practical clinical experience and learning from the veterinary specialists within a referral practice environment.  You will:

  • Gain experience in all areas of anaesthesia
  • Have exposure to a large caseload including anaesthetic management of routine referral cases and emergencies.
  • Have daily interaction with Specialists and experts in anaesthesia and other disciplines.
  • Improve your chances of securing an anaesthesia residency training position.

 

Main areas of work and training

  • To work as a part of the anaesthesia team and assist with the provision of care to patients within the hospital.  The team currently comprises of five ECVAA diplomats, two board-eligible (ECVAA residency-trained) clinicians and one anaesthesia intern.
  • To contribute to all aspects of perioperative patient care and assessment, with case responsibility and working independently, where this is judged to be appropriate.
  • To attend rounds, gaining exposure and knowledge of interesting cases to support your personal development.
  • To work closely with the Theatre and Diagnostic Head Nurses/Supervisors (and wider Nursing team) to facilitate an efficient and effective flow of cases through clinical areas.
  • To assist in the setting up for anaesthetic procedures in theatre and diagnostics areas.
  • To handle, pick up, sedate and hold patients.
  • To assist with a range of anaesthetic procedures and, with time, learn to carry out procedures independently.  This will include the placement of arterial cannulae, central venous cannulae, epidural placement and locoregional anaesthesia where appropriate.
  • To maintain and continue professional development as relevant to your specialism.
  • To assist with CPD provision and training for rotating interns and other colleagues across the practice where appropriate.
  • To identify and develop a suitable research project to be undertaken during the internship that is ideally suitable for publication or presentation at a suitable specialist meeting.

  • To report hazards, defects, accidents, injuries or incidents that occur in the workplace.
  • To carry out any other duties as required and as appropriate to your skills, experience and knowledge and your position here at the practice.
  • To provide an excellent level of patient care.
  • To work in accordance with the Practice Standard Operating Procedures.
  • To ensure that all necessary retention fees, subscriptions and registrations are up to date.

Specific experiences / qualifications / status / citizenship requirements

You must fulfil the following requirements:

  • Have an excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Maintain a professional and caring approach in all aspects of your work
  • Provide evidence of your Right to Work in the UK
  • Undergraduate Veterinary Degree
  • RCVS current membership
  • Previous experience of clinical cases
  • Competent in use of Microsoft office and clinical systems for email, producing letters and report, recording accurate patient records, etc
