Veterinary Nursing Beyond Borders: Lorna’s Fiji Experience
22nd October 2026
, Registered Veterinary Nurse at Davies Veterinary Specialists, swapped Hertfordshire for Fiji for a very different kind of veterinary experience, volunteering with Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS).
Working alongside the team at PASH Fiji, Lorna had the opportunity to use her nursing skills to help care for animals in need, while gaining a first-hand insight into some of the animal welfare challenges faced on the islands.
During her time there, Lorna helped care for a wide variety of patients, many of whom had experienced significant hardship.

One patient she will never forget was Angel, a dog who arrived at the shelter with severe burns to her mouth. Despite the extent of her injuries, Angel showed remarkable resilience. Following intensive nursing care, pain management and reconstructive surgery, she made an incredible recovery and was soon enjoying attention and playtime with the team.

Another memorable patient was Scrappy, a stray dog who arrived in poor body condition with severe skin disease. With treatment, nutritional support and plenty of patient care, Scrappy gradually regained his health and confidence, becoming a firm favourite with those looking after him.
Lorna also met Puss Puss, a much-loved resident shelter cat whose story highlighted some of the challenges animals can face living in a tropical climate, particularly those with lightly pigmented skin.
But Lorna’s experience wasn’t only about caring for individual patients. Her time in Fiji also gave her an opportunity to learn more about the wider animal welfare work being carried out by PASH Fiji and the team’s efforts to improve the lives of animals across the islands.

For Lorna, the trip was an incredibly rewarding opportunity to take her veterinary nursing skills beyond Davies, work with a passionate local team and make a difference to animals in need.
It was an experience that brought together everything at the heart of veterinary nursing: compassion, adaptability, teamwork and, of course, a love of animals.
